In the contract, not just on the website
Our 3-year written workmanship warranty
Published in full, including the exclusions. A warranty you cannot read before you sign is not a warranty, it is a slogan.
What is covered
For three years from substantial completion, we will repair at no cost to you any of the following where it is caused by our workmanship or our materials:
- Peeling, blistering, flaking or cracking of the coating
- Excessive chalking beyond normal product expectation
- Failure of caulk joints we installed
- Failure of carpentry we performed, including fasteners and joints
- Coating failure over bare substrate we primed
Repair means preparation, primer and finish coats to match, at our cost, including labour and materials.
What is not covered
Being specific here is the point. These are the genuine exclusions, and any contractor whose warranty has none is not telling you the truth:
- Damage from storms, hail, fallen limbs, fire, flood or impact
- Failure caused by an underlying moisture problem — a leaking gutter, failed flashing, ice damming, grade against siding — that was identified and declined, or that arose after we finished
- Structural movement, settlement cracking, or substrate failure we did not install
- Normal fading of color from UV, which every exterior coating does
- Surfaces the customer asked us to coat against our written recommendation
- Horizontal walking surfaces — deck floors, stair treads, porch decking — where wear is normal and expected
- Damage from pressure washing, chemical cleaning or repainting by others
- Mildew growth, which is environmental; we will advise on cleaning
How long a paint job should last anyway
A properly prepared exterior in Massachusetts should give you seven to ten years. South and west elevations fail first. If your paint fails inside three years, something was wrong with the preparation, the product or the substrate — which is precisely the window this warranty covers.
Say this to every contractor you meet
“Send me your warranty in writing, with the exclusions, before I sign.” The answer you get to that one question will sort your three bids faster than the prices will.
3 years
Written into the contract, transferable to a new owner, covering workmanship on both painting and carpentry.
FAQ
Warranty questions
Is three years actually longer than everyone else?
It is the longest written warranty we can find published by any painting company in MetroWest. Most publish nothing at all; the ones that do offer two years.
What if the company is not around in three years?
A fair question to ask anyone. We have been operating in Sudbury for well over a decade, we are BBB accredited since 2011, and our HIC registration is public and current. That is the best assurance any contractor can honestly give.
Does the warranty transfer if I sell the house?
Yes — tell us and we will note the new owner. A transferable workmanship warranty is a genuine talking point in a listing.
How do I make a claim?
Call (978) 798-4002 or email contactus@targetpainting.com with photographs. We come out and look. If it is workmanship, we fix it at no charge, including materials and labour.
