Map Why Ring Core Purpose

Task Library

Define the innermost ring of the Topic Wheel – the core mission and reason the brand exists – so every method and content piece in the outer rings traces back to one purpose.

Category: Strategy & Measurement

Use this when starting a Topic Wheel for a brand, or when content has drifted into random topics and needs to be re-anchored to the mission.

Inputs

  • The owner's honest answers to "why do you do this work?" (interview or self-interview, recorded)
  • Real client stories – moments the owner is proudest of and the problem that drove them
  • Any existing mission/WHY statements, to be tested rather than assumed

Steps

  1. Define the ring: the WHY is the center of the Topic Wheel – the core purpose and mission, the reason the brand exists beyond making money. It is not a service list and not a tagline.
  2. Interview the owner on camera or voice: why this work, who it serves, what injustice or problem makes it matter. Push past first answers ("to help businesses grow") to the personal driver underneath.
  3. Draft the WHY as one or two plain sentences a customer would actually believe – specific enough that a competitor couldn't paste it onto their site.
  4. Validate it against evidence: at least three real client stories should embody this WHY. If the stories don't match the statement, the statement is aspiration, not purpose – rewrite it.
  5. Place the WHY at the center of the Topic Wheel document; every HOW spoke and WHAT topic added later must trace back to it or be cut.
  6. Reuse it downstream: this same WHY scripts the 3-minute WHY video (SAE Stage 3) and anchors the mission in SAE Stage 2 goals.
  7. Measure it: in content reviews, check what share of published pieces still trace to the WHY; drift below ~90% means the wheel (or the content calendar) needs correcting.

Definition of done (QA checklist)

  • WHY written in 1-2 plain sentences, specific to this person/brand
  • Backed by at least three real client stories that embody it
  • Placed at the center of the Topic Wheel document
  • Consistent with the SAE Stage 2 mission and the WHY video script
  • Linked back to the definitive article and relevant siblings
  • Complies with Blog Posting Guidelines (if it publishes content)
